Word Work
Word work in grade one usually involves phonics activities, sorting words into word families (phonological awareness), letter writing (fine motor skills) and identification, and spelling irregular high-frequency words.
Jolly Phonique worksheets and card activities would be completed during this centre, depending on what letter sounds are being studied that week.

Word Family Trash Can- Students put rhyming words into separate mini trash cans. One could make this a non-reading activity by putting a picture of one of the rhyming words on the can instead of the rime.
Word Family Lego- Students sort and stack Duplo pieces based on the same rimes.
Building Word Families- This recipe provides a variety of ways to connect rimes and onsets to make one-syllable words.
Naming Objects from the sound bin- Students sort objects into two or three separate bins depending on their initial phoneme.
