Direct Instruction
Every morning, there is a 50 minute block for direct literacy instruction. Direct instruction is important to make sure that all students are developing their literacy skills through thoughtful, guided mini-lessons. Students would only sit for a maximum of 15 minutes and after will be able to move around and engage in activities.

- A read-aloud including vocabulary building and discussion
- Direct teaching or review of Jolly Phonique sounds and letters
- Words of the week read by the teacher then repeated back to the teacher by the students.
- A mini-lesson on an aspect of literacy that will be a unique literacy centre for that day (see Literacy Centres)
- Explanation of the literacy centres available that day
