Social Studies and Literacy
Social studies in Ontario is a period where the study of literacy is tightly bound to citizenship education. The purpose of the citizenship education is to have student’s learn about
what it means to be a responsible and active citizen in both the classroom and
the local communities they belong to outside of school. It doesn’t just stop
there though: student’s are expected to develop an understanding that they are
citizens of the global community, and that their actions and attitudes could
have a real impact on their nation an on the world. All of those expectations are done through a literacy framework, where students read and listen to stories of the people of our world community, whilst simultaneously developing listening and reading comprehension strategies as well as vocabulary.
