Floor Plan
Our classroom floor plan reflects a thoughtful use of space and collaborative learning. The first thing to notice is that there are no individual desks. Students are to sit with peers at different tables around the classroom. This purposeful placement is to foster dialogue among students and therefore increase the practice of oral language. In addition, our teaching philosophy is that there is no I without the non-I; students need to dialogue in order to learn. One table is designated for smaller guided reading groups. The placement of the table is positioned so that the teacher can work with a small group of students but also be able to watch over other students in the classroom for safety. There is one computer in the classroom, two listening players and one Smartboard. These devices are used to help students increase their listening, speaking and oral language development in French. The Smartboard is placed in front of a carpet where children sit. This is so that the teacher can refer to and use the Smartboard for different lessons. The space in the lower left-hand corner of the classroom floor plan is used for lessons as well. This is a multi-purpose space. Students go to this corner for the morning routine as there is a portable white board for the teacher to use to conduct lessons as well as a student eye-level wall space to fill with the words of the week. Bookshelves at eye-level for students surround this space. These bookshelves hold personal book bins filled with levelled books for the students to use either for their guided reading groups or for when the student is in the Read to Someone literacy centre. The bookshelves also have different teddy bears for the students to read their books to. Finally, the bookshelves provide students with books of every level and genre. These books are for the children's amusement and are categorized by genre. Students work is plastered all over the walls of the classroom at student eye level so that they can track their own progress. The spaces in the classroom are designed to facilitate literacy growth in oral and written French language. Each space is designated for students to either be practicing French reading, listening, writing and/or speaking.
