On days 1 and 2 of the 5-day cycle, the teacher uses the GB+ levelled readers to do running records and comprehension checks. This will occur one-on-one during literacy centres time from 9:50-10:40 am, so that the other students are engaged and occupied in quiet individual or pair activities. The teacher will complete four or five assessments per day, meaning that they will be able to have one reading assessment per month with the children. Struggling students or those undergoing reading interventions may see the teacher more often.
Running records try to find the ideal reading level for learning readers. In the ideal book, sometimes called “perfect choice” books, the child can read with 90-95% accuracy as well as at least 70% comprehension. If comprehension is lower than 70%, it shows that the child is not reading fluently, and putting so much attention into decoding the words that they cannot focus on the story or information in the text.
Teachers use the running records to assign GB+ levels to students which designate the level of book that they can use for other centres, such as read to someone and teddy bear kingdom (read aloud to self), and the books they take home to read with their parents. These levels will also determine their group for guided reading, although in a broader sense.
Each student will be re-evaluated this way about once a month, as children of this grade often advance very quickly and need to change the level of their readers. This is also a time to help the children review and choose new books for their individual book boxes. In addition, these evaluations will help the teacher identify struggling readers. This time may also be used to help these children one-on-one or in small groups.
GB+ is a levelled book series from the prominent Quebec publisher Cheneliere. The levels range from beginning reading to about a grade 4-5 French Immersion level. The evaluation package includes other levelled books that the teacher does not make available in the class, meaning that when they do their reading evaluation, it will be the first time they see the book.
