Read, Reflect, Retell
Explicit instruction of reading comprehension strategies is fundamental for the stage one reader. “Comprehension strategy instruction helps students become purposeful, active readers who are in control of their own reading comprehension” (Armbruster & Lehr, 2001). The Read, Reflect & Retell center is a reading comprehension center where students go to read and make a conscious effort to think about their understanding of the passages they are reading. Some common comprehension strategies include:
- making connections to prior knowledge,
- predicting, questioning, and wondering about what will happen next
- visualize or imagine the scenarios in their minds, or let them draw it out
- monitor their own understanding and make use of strategies like rereading, looking at pictures, and asking for help to make sense of what they read.
- determining the most important ideas and events in the story and summarizing it.
- drawing conclusions and making inferences from what they read
- collaboration through retell (Cunningham & Allington, 2011)
