Read to Someone in the Teddy Bear Kingdom
During this centre, pairs of students work together, each reading one book to the other.
Reading aloud to someone using level books better develops fluency and accuracy than silent reading (see this Reading Rockets article). Fluency is developed because the child is encouraged to use expression, intonation and pauses in order to convey the story to the other person. Accuracy is developed as the child is corrected or reminded of a strategy. The other person may also help the child comprehend the text. Read to someone should be done with a text that the child is already familiar with and has already read before, or has listened to in the Technology and Listening center.
Another successful way to improve fluency is to read the same text over and over again. During the read to someone literacy centre, students will be asked to chose a book that they have already read to read to their friend.
