Morning Routine
8:30-8:40
Question of the Day
Each day begins with a Question of the Day. When students arrive in class and have put away their knapsacks, they know to come to the board and read the Question of the Day. The question is level appropriate so that every student is able to understand and participate. The question may elicit students to answer with yes or no, or students have to write their names and then place it under the column that best suits their interest (for example, the season is changing to winter, which season do you like better?) Sometimes students will be asked to survey a friend in the class and write out his or her answer on little cards to paste up on the board. This activity provides children with the opportunity to build oral language and communication skills. In addition, children are practising their writing. The teacher should set up this activity so that students are be able to do it autonomously. If students finish before announcements begin they can read quietly to themselves on the carpet or they can find an activity around the classroom that has been set up by the teacher (puzzles, word games, exploration).

The Student of the Day runs through the following routine with the support of the class (it is important to note that each student must have the opportunity to be the Student of the Day before the cycle begins again):
- The calendar
- The temperature
- Place Value Tens Chart (have children count how many ones and tens are in the number that represents the day)
The Student of the Day now summarize the results of the Question of the Day. Some of the questions that students can answer are:
- Which column had the most names?
- What do students enjoy more?
- Which column has the least amount of names?
- Why do you think this column had more?
The teacher wraps up the morning routine by asking if any students have something they want to share with the class (this can be something exciting they did the night before, a book or a toy they wanted to bring in).
