Journal
Students write 3-5 sentences using invented spelling and any writing conventions available to them, along with a picture. The journal topics reflect their learning from the previous day in science, social studies, outdoor education or other subjects (as indicated onthe weekly schedule as Xcurriculum, cross curricular). During the morning mini lesson, the teacher talks about what the journal topic of the day is.
Because for most of these students, speaking in French is a lot easier than writing, we will incorporate speaking into the planning of the journal writing literacy centre. In groups of two or three, students will talk about what they are going to write, then write down 3-5 key words before starting their first sentence.
Proper spelling will only be required for the few common grade-level sight words that students will have taped inside the front cover of their journals. Otherwise, inventive spelling is developmentally appropriate for students focussing on letter sounds and phonics.
