Overview
This website outlines the literacy program we would implement in a hypothetical grade one French Immersion class. We are simulating a classroom where most of our students are in the middle of Stage 1 in their literacy development and come from an English as a first language family.
Throughout our website you will be able to explore and learn about different aspects of French literacy in the classroom. Our website offers teachers a researched based list of literacy centres, behavioural accommodations and classroom structures to try out with their students as well as ways to integrate literacy with different curriculum subject areas. Each page is connected with a food group and/or RECIPE. These words are something you will see throughout this website and are taken from the Balanced Literacy Website designed by Dale Willows. Our website is a reflection of their design and correlates with their methods of teaching and learning. Enjoy!

ÉTAPE 1B |
Below, there are three "plates" with different balances of "food groups" for stages 0, 1 and 2 of literacy development, as seen on the Balanced Literacy Diet website. In Stage 1, which would normally be during SK or early grade one for first-language students, the focus of the literacy program moves from phonemic awareness to letter-sounds and phonics. Other important aspects of literacy instruction that are added in Stage 1 are reading comprehension and writing processes and strategies. Click here for brief description of each of the "food groups" involved in Stage 1.

In French Immersion, we expect most students to enter into mid stage 1 in their literacy development about half-way through grade one. Oral language development will precede reading and writing competencies, so developing strong oral language skills and vocabulary will be a larger focus of our French literacy program than the stage one "plate" below.
|

These pyramids highlight how certain literacy skills and strategies affect others and build upon each other with the main goals of successful reading comprehension and written expression.
